47th World Tourism Day: Winning synergy in Sanaga-Maritime for digital tourism development

Organized by the Divisional Delegation of Tourism and Leisure under the leadership of Divisional Delegate Idriss Pascal SALLA, the event operated under the patronage of the Senior Divisional Officer, Cyrille Yvan Abondo, represented by his 4th Deputy. Centered on the urgent need for local councils and media professionals to structure an attractive digital offering, the gathering convened journalists, communicators, local government representatives, and hotel operators to transform the region's tourism marketing. The seminar opened with a comprehensive overview of Sanaga-Maritime’s rich and diverse tourism assets, contrasting sharply with a critical assessment of the current e-reputation of local councils presented by IT engineer Saïd AMANG. Discussions led by development communication expert Serge Eric ÉPOUNÈ and representatives from the Édéa City Council tackled the role of tourism and communication within Communal Development Plans - PCD. Speakers emphasized that modern digital communication is not merely a promotional tool, but a fundamental driver for regional planning, economic expansion, and effective territorial marketing. To bridge the existing digital gap, participants adopted three major strategic resolutions to elevate the division's profile. First, a draft Digital Charter for Tourism Promotion and Territorial Development will be submitted for municipal approval. Second, stakeholders committed to launching the dedicated digital platform "Visite Sanaga-Maritime". Finally, press trips to key tourist sites will be organized to generate compelling digital content, enhancing the region's visibility among national and international audiences. A primary focus was placed on better documenting and storytelling around the area's lesser-known ecological and cultural treasures. Participants highlighted the need to showcase sites such as Balangué Island, stretching across ten villages from Yassoukou to Mouanko, the MAFRIC, MOLI, and Ossa lakes in Dizangué, the Sanaga River, the Édéa falls and gorges, Yoyo beach, and the Douala-Édéa Reserve. Special emphasis was also dedicated to highlighting the heritage of traditional chiefdoms as essential cultural anchors for regional tourism. Looking to the future, attendees praised the initiative as a decisive milestone in structuring local tourism within Sanaga-Maritime's municipalities. The division is uniquely positioned to capitalize on major regional infrastructure developments, including the extension of the Kribi Deep Seaport to Dibamba, the planned Édéa-Kribi rail logistics corridor, and an influx of private enterprises in Édéa. By aligning digital strategy with economic growth, local leaders aim to establish Sanaga-Maritime as an organized, highly visible destination in the modern digital era. This deliberate emphasis on physical endurance highlighted the deep connection between personal health and a thriving environment, demonstrating that personal fitness mirrors the resilience required for long-term climate advocacy. Upon reaching the summit, the physical trek transitioned into a dynamic space for climate dialogue and intellectual exchange. Sitting together at the top, participants engaged in structured discussions around energy transition, regional pollution, and the exploitation of natural resources. The gathering served as a vital forum to amplify the voices of African communities and brainstorm actionable strategies to promote renewable energy across the continent ahead of upcoming global summits. To reinforce key concepts, the summit program featured an interactive, competitive learning game focused on COP negotiations and climate history. Participants raced to grab a bottle to earn the right to answer challenging questions, creating a constructive and engaging atmosphere. Far from a simple lecture, the session fostered collaborative conversations specifically tailored to the pressing climate challenges facing Cameroon and the broader African region. The Mount Nkolso’o hike successfully demonstrated how active physical engagement can elevate environmental advocacy. By combining bodily wellness with meaningful dialogue, JVE Cameroon and ADEV mobilized citizens to take ownership of both their health and their planet. The stark figures highlight a deepening protection crisis across all ten regions of the country, prompting urgent calls from human rights organizations and international bodies for comprehensive legal reform, stronger institutions, and improved public service delivery. Regions impacted by prolonged conflict and displacement accounted for the majority of the reported incidents. The Far North topped the nation with 1,828 cases, representing roughly 37% of the total, followed by the South West with 980 cases and the North West with 451. The South West’s high burden is particularly striking given its smaller population compared to major urban hubs like the Centre (423 cases) and Littoral (264 cases) regions. The remaining cases were distributed across the South (346), North (209), East (174), West (122), and Adamawa (106). Humanitarian agencies point to severe instability as the primary accelerator of gender-based violence in the hardest-hit areas. In the Far North, North West, and South West, years of conflict, kidnapping, and displacement have dismantled local livelihoods, disrupted educational systems, and restricted access to basic health and justice services. A 2026 UNFPA situation report underscored that women and children in these volatile environments face heightened exposure to sexual violence, domestic abuse, and economic precarity. In June 2026, United Nations representatives expressed deep concern over rising reports of sexual violence against children, infanticide, and femicide across Cameroon. Human Rights Watch - HRW echoed these warnings, emphasizing that while the figures demonstrate a distressing surge, they reflect only a fraction of the problem. HRW noted that MINPROFF officials themselves regard official tracking as "the tip of the iceberg" due to structural barriers in data collection. Under-reporting remains widespread throughout the country, heavily constrained by social stigma, fear of retaliation, financial dependence on perpetrators, and cultural pressure to keep family matters private. The absence of a unified, disaggregated national reporting system further complicates efforts to capture the full scope of domestic abuse and systemic violence, leaving many survivors isolated from legal recourse or medical care. In response to the escalating demand for aid, humanitarian organizations continue to deliver essential frontline relief. According to recent UN evaluation metrics, local interventions have established safe spaces providing direct psychosocial assistance to thousands of women, alongside distributing dignity kits to tens of thousands of young girls and survivors across crisis-impacted communities. Addressing the national crisis requires concerted, multi-sectoral action from government institutions, community leaders, and international stakeholders. While conflict zones suffer from acute compound vulnerabilities, gender-based violence remains a pervasive issue across all ten regions of Cameroon, demanding systemic legal reforms, economic empowerment for women, and guaranteed access to justice for survivors nationwide.
